Leaving the Cuffs Behind
« on: September 28, 2017, 05:12:08 PM »
There were two distinct sides to Ming-Na Lee - the first was what she showed the world, a good cop cleaning up a shitty 'Verse. Then their was the not quite so good cop who like beating people up and generally being quite a bitch. Whichever side she showed she usually had an expression that told people, "Just don't fuck with me." That usually kept most people away. Apparently one was not allowed t hang around on the street in uniform without some fucking old turd coming up to you and asking for help. Did she look like a local sheriff?! Carly had told her years ago not to wear anything that identified her as a cop, and she didn't when undercover of course, but other times...

"No ma'am, I am not from around here. Just passing through. Please try the Sheriff's office a few blocks that way." She replied faux pleasantly, the smile clearly false.

It was that false niceness that meant the old hag couldn't really complain, it wasn't as if she had been unhelpful, was it?! Taking off the jacket that had the Feds badge on it she tossed it in with her bags and leaned against the nearest wall.

Carly was late and Ming-Na was going to give her a tongue lashing when she finally turned up! It was bad enough that they'd had to pack and be ready to board the Paladin any day now, but Carly not pulling her weight? So typical! It didn't matter that Ming-Na knew she was being overly cautious and worried about this new assignment. It was always difficult when meeting new people to keep the truth of their odd relationship a secret but being on a ship was going to make it extra hard. All the things they had acquired over the years had to be sold or stored somewhere, and they would no longer be sharing a bed. Ming-Na would never admit it, least of all to Carly, but she'd gotten used to having someone there at night. After so many years of flings and one night stands sharing a bed with someone had not come naturally, yet now after doing it for so long she had to give it up! It just wasn't fair, but who could they complain to?

Fraternisation was frowned upon, but same-sex relations with a co-worker? Ming-Na could not imagine how that would be handled. Even if it was not officially wrong they'd likely be pushed out and definitely put on separate assignments, probably opposite sides of the Verse. So they kept it secret because despite appearances the two actually worked very well together - in and out of bed.

Carly's day started late.  While Ming-Na had risen early, organizing her already organized packed luggage, running about the apartment checking and double-checking arrangements, Carly lay sprawled in their bed, blanket over her head, making little effort to rouse herself.  A long, coltish leg lay bared, kicking futilely at the air when Ming harangued her about being lazy and needing to get up.  An unintelligible noise drifted from under the covers.

She didn't want to leave.  Under the blankets, Carly hugged Ming-Na's pillow, pressing her face to it and filling her nostrils with the woman's scent lingering in the fabric.   They had to leave their home, their bed for a damned cold ship hanging out in the black.  Fatalistic Ming had accepted it and began to move on.  Carly didn't buy it.  She knew, deep down, Ming had feelings.  She was just so damn good at hiding them behind cool, standoffish demeanor.   But they had made the deal, in the hope they could stay together.

Ming had left one more chastisement for her roommate to get up and get her stuff together or they would miss the Paladin and be in even deeper Go shi.  MIng-Na went on about a couple things she had to do and said she would meet Carly at the port.

"Don't wear your uniform!"  Carly yelled back from under the covers.

Finally dragging herself out of bed, Carly skipped the shower and got dressed, simple dark pants, green blouse and boots.  She rummaged through her bags to find a brush and dragged it through her auburn mane, finally finding a tie and pulling it back into a loose ponytail.  Luckily, Ming had convinced Carly to pack her things the night before, before the redhead had too many drinks.  So all Carly had to do was gather them up and make an idiot check around the place to make sure they had everything.  Downing a couple pain relievers to quell the hangover, all was ready and she headed out.

The cab dumped her off at the port, and Carly found Ming-Na outside the dock where they were to meet Carmichael and the Paladin.  "Hey, you gorgeous hunka femininity you."  Carly teased playfully as she jaunted up to Ming-Na, pulling her luggage behind her.  Carly knew her girlfriend would be pissed that she was late, but something in Carly always had to pull on that thread a bit, just to see the raven-headed woman fume.   She stopped right in front of Ming, flashing a smile and pecking her on the lips before strutting off to check to see if the ship had arrived, even though she knew that Ming-Na would have done so already.  Probably several times.

Entirely and utterly horrified by such a public display Ming-Na could not help but react in the way that was natural for her under such circumstances! Her uniform reminded her of the rules she had to keep in public, the things that kept her doing the job she wanted to do and not bringing her family disgrace. What she did in private was no-one's business but hers (and whomever shared the private "moment", be it a lover or criminal on the wrong end of her temper) so she did not care what rules or laws she broke then, but at a public port where everyone could see them? When they were being monitored?!!!

"Meh Lien Duh Jyah Jee!" She shouted, even though such a curse was actually more likely to gain the wrong kinds of attention! Realising that she picked up her things and walked quickly into the nearest bar. There was a screen with all the new arrivals in port, she'd know when an Alliance Ship like the Paladin would arrive. Bringing her luggage onto the seat beside her she looked at it and tried not to frown. She'd not brought much, only the essentials, Ming-Na was not the sentimental kind so leaving things behind had never bothered her, at least not until today. Looking at it now she could not help but think about all the things she'd left behind, including that huge bed which she had shared with her partner for years. Emotions never did sit right with Ming though so she shook herself out of such contemplation and readied herself for Carly. Assuming the woman even heard what she shouted, it was entirely possible that the moment she began walking away she was listening to music or some such. Ming was actually starting to hope she had, she was not up for an argument over this.

Ordering a beer and some food the Marshal made sure they saw her badge and jacket so she'd get a "discount". It was the kind of discount that was not verbally agreed, they knew her well enough to charge her less when it came to settling the bill. Today though she was going to get it for free, just because she was in a foul mood and not living here anymore.

That thought would not seem to shift even when she tried to shake it free and push it away. Leaving today. No longer just partners, but living in close quarters on a ship. Close but not able to touch her. It was going to be a living hell.

Carly did hear Ming-Na's reply.  It made her laugh at first, then the red head felt a little bad about teasing her partner.  It was a hard day for both of them, and making light of it was like poking at sunburn, unfortunately, something the fair-skinned woman understood.  Carly followed Ming-Na into the bar, dragging her luggage with her.  She plopped down next to the raven-haired beauty.

"I may be a hussy, but I am not shameless."  She said, less boisterously and with mock hurt, keeping the conversation between her and Ming-Na.  Then her head turned to give her friend a small smile.  "Sorry, just trying to deal with all of this."  She added, ordering a beer as well, pulling out the badge hanging on a chain around her neck for the bartender to see before tucking it back into her blouse.  Okay, maybe she was shameless when it came to getting a cheap drink.

Carly  didn't look forward to the stint on the Paladin.  The marshal had no interest in planet jumping space travel.  She had remained pretty rooted.  But their careers, their special friendship, were on the line.  She could not lose her job or Ming-Na, they were all she really had anymore.  Her father still had no idea how to be a father, and her older brothers had their own lives and families on another world.  She was willing to suck it up and stick it out on the boat until they were considered suitable for dirt-side duty again.  But the troubled redhead was bound and determined that she was going to find a way to be with Ming-Na during their tour of duty, one way or another.  She had needs, after all.  Not to mention a serious fondness for the straight-laced, almond eyed woman sitting next to her.

" Reduced-priced drinks are on me, Lǎohǔ bǎihé."  Carly offered with a warm smile, using the pet name she gave the woman.  It seemed to fit, given the two sides of Ming-Na that few but her had seen...her ferocious capacity for violence, and her beautiful sweet nature in their bed.

Tempted as she was to berate her partner Ming also knew that this was her way of trying to cope. It was the way that would grate most against Ming's own sensibilities but that was the challenge of working and living so closely with this firebrand of a woman, was it not? Indeed, she was sure that the challenge that Carly represented was why she even stayed - and stayed, and stayed. The constant state of conflict was enlivening, never really settling, and never having to stick with the same thing. Ming-Na tended to get bored easily, but with Carly every day was a new, challenging adventure. Even the fights - or most especially the fights - were rewarding.

As the server walked away Ming's hand slid up Carly's thigh and the tiniest of smiles graced her lips. Settling her fingers on her inner thigh and leaned forward, a feigned scowl on her face.

"You definitely are a hussy, but you are my hussy." It seemed Ming was in a dominant mood today, she certainly felt in the mood to take control. It was the absolute wrong time to be needing to get rid of tension, with no means to dominate Carly in the way she liked to and no criminals to at least take that frustration out on! And the Paladin, of course, was due any time now, so there was not time to hunt for criminals nor somewhere private. That was probably the most frustrating thing of all. The time for privacy with Carly was coming to and end and last night was their last night for a very long time.

It gives you incentive to impress this new captain, she thought, but Ming knew that without Carly she would likely be more violent, not less. It was a conundrum and one she needed to solve swiftly lest they be assigned to different posts and have to choose between each other or the job they both loved.

Like a summer thunderstorm, as suddenly as it stirred up, Ming's wrath disappeared.  It was her volatile nature, and, also like a thunderstorm, the woman could be violent.  It was the extreme swing that was Ming-Na Lee, from reserved and professional, to stark violence, to dark desires.  It was a bag of thrills being with the woman, and Ming-Na gave them to Carly in spades.

Case in point, while Ming's stern Chinese chastisement still lingered in her head, Carly felt the insistent hand of her partner slide up her thigh, sending electric joints through her body.  Ming's stoic tone had turned to a sultry, possessive voice Carly knew well, and it made her spine tingle.   The redhead shot back a wry grin and purred her her throat.  It was more than randy flirting, it was Ming's way of telling her she was alright, that they would be alright.

"Damn straight, my mistress..."  Carly teased back with a feral grin, leaning closer to Ming, her azure gazed fixed on the dark mystic eyes of her partner, speaking without words her devotion.  Then she sat back and took a deep swig of her beer, glancing around the bar, catching several men eyeing the female marshal's,  She shot back a cold, daring stare.

"Hell, maybe we just mutiny and take over the ship, become pirates instead.   Red Muff and Madame Death, the the scourge of the 'verse."  She teased, laughing at herself.  Carly knew that they, in fact, had to be on their best behavior on the Paladin, to pay their penance.  But the ship of ex-military marshals had a reputation of their own, and Carly looked forward to seeing some of those gritty missions.

The glare the Ming-Na shot the men looking at them might have killed, such was her vitriol. Unlike Carly, Ming did not find men attractive in the least and though she did not feel jealousy, exactly, she did feel possessiveness. Gripping Carly's thigh harder but not leaning in at all she narrowed her gaze on the voyeurs. Ming-Na hated public displays of affection, they put their careers at risk, but this was different. This was unusual circumstances. This was not a public display, per se, but she knew they were interpreting it as such.

"Let's just get the drinks and leave this damned planet." She muttered, knowing there was nothing she could do right now. It bothered her no end, yet what could she do? As much as she wanted to think it was a gender issue she was fairly certain that if they'd been two man they would be in the same situation. The fact was that Carly allowed her to indulge the darker side of her personality, as well as let her be the submissive one too. That was something Ming-Na was in need of and it was why she had stayed close to Carly. Of course she had thought about there being deeper reasons for this partnership, but Ming was not one to allow herself to dwell for too long on such things. Life was not about love or even intimacy, it was about survival and being the best she could be for her. Carly helped her do that, and that was why she stayed.

Or so she told herself.

Carly caught the skunk eye her partner shot at the two men.  If Carly was the firebrand of the couple, Ming was the ice queen.  That dark, almond-shaped glare could be as cold and hard as frozen steel, eclipsing her beauty with a menacing chill.  The two gawkers shied back from the withering stare, shaking their heads and turning back to their drinks, keeping any comments to a safe whisper.  Carly felt it in the solid grip on her thigh, not a racy flirtatious squeeze, but a possessive grasp.    Sometimes the woman was too uptight for her own good, but the red head didn't push Ming-Na about it, the woman had her reasons, Carly surmised.  Besides, Ming had earned her partner's respect, and if the black-haired marshal could tolerate Carly's bawdy behaviors, the freckled agent would let Ming-Na's rigidity slide.

Carly nodded her head to Ming's irritated suggestion.  As soon as the beers came, the red head took a deep, unlady-like swig.   She tried to turn Ming's attention away from the onlookers.  Carly wasn't bothered by curious eyes.  If Ming would let her, Carly would climb right up in her lap and suck her face in front of everyone.   Ming had called her shameless, and while Carly denied it, she did have considerably less shame than her partner.  At times, it was fun to prod at Ming-Na's straight-laced public behavior, maybe because Ming was very different in private.  Thrilling, daring, and on occasion...dangerous.  The woman was an enigma, but she was Carly's enigma.

"i heard these boys like to play with big guns, kinda excited about that."  Carly confessed.  She had a thing for firearms.  The red head was a crack shot, but had little chance to employ more than her small side arm on duty.  Her propensity to use it quite readily was one of the reasons she was facing discipline.

Despite her temper and her genuine need to hurt people (usually criminals but sometimes things got messy) Ming-Na did have respect for the new Captain they were to serve under. It wasn't anything personal, her annoyance at this assignment was purely on the basis that she and Carly had to live their lie under closer scrutiny. As far as she knew Carmichael was a decorated war veteran and a good captain on a small but effective ship.

Shrugging, and showing none of her emotions on the subject, Ming muttered, "We'll see for ourselves soon enough." Indeed, the Paladin was due in port this very day though the Marshal had no idea exactly when, it was why she was so damned tense right now! And Carly was not really helping. Part of it was her fault because she couldn't stop teasing, but then she couldn't help but be a temptation either. So she took her hand away from her partner's thigh and finished her beer in a few swigs. Waiting was thirsty work but she refused to be even slightly tipsy when she met their new captain. The better they did on this ship then the faster they'd get the hell off of it!

"I heard they lost a lot of crew lately." Ming-Na mused as she stared out of the window and towards the ships. "Means they could be in bad shape when we get there." The question was did they take advantage of that or did they try and help? The Marshal knew which path she preferred.
