"Ok good so far. Each of those bundles of wire should lead to a switch for the fuses. Go ahead and find the black-yellow wire bundle and follow it to the switch. When you find it, turn it off."

Mao sat down on his crate, one eye monitoring the doctor and the other a screen of rolling readouts and self-testing data.

"Oh, and don't use two hands. And don't touch any metal."

"If they were smugglin' munitions...yeah. Yeah, false transponder makes the most sense to me. My bet is browncoats."

There's a long pause over the intercom.

"Bet we're stealing from the thieves. If there is something left, bet it'd be interesting at least. We can always cannibalize the parts."

Mao's voice squawked over the intercom a few moments later.

"Looks like a shit-show to me, Da-ghuh. That hole's in life support, and whatever went up,
it went up big time. Like it was carryin' munitions...I remember seeing a couple of reports and pictures about ammo magazines on ships being compromised. This looks like a scaled down version. This is an L-T-V?"

Mao walked over to lean against the entrance to the narrow walkway, effectively blocking the doctor's egress, though that hardly seemed his true intent.

"Ok, you're looking for panel thirty-three dash nine. It's between panels thirty-three and thirty-five pop the black and yellow catch levers on either side up, then outward. It's going to wanna slide off so catch it or yer lookin' at bruised toes. It ain't a newborn so don't worry about bumps and scrapes."

Pointing with his good hand, he gestured to the panel in question. This is where it got fun.

"Three-three-nine has a lot of live wires in there, and it's got nuke-level juice running through it, so don't go completing circuits or your going to be the center of a Class Charlie fire that'll flash the water in your blood into hydrogen and oxygen, and then we're out a doctor and I have to fight an electrical fire. So, let's avoid that. Now, pop the cover and lets see what we can see."

Your second sweep is at a much better resolution and you feel confident that your ship and the Deuteronomy are alone here in the black. However, the new angle and subsequent scan reveal a troubling amount of debris in the wake of the ship, which your equipment tracks in a long arc behind the ship where it mixes with radiation and exhaust trails. There's no way to tell at this distance as to the exact cause of the debris, but two possibilities enter the forefront of your minds; asteroid or meteoric impact to the vessel like a space aged ice-berg moving at thousands of meters a second or the more troubling possibility of an explosive decompression.

The heavily filtered voice of Mao barks out of the intercom.

"Actual, this is boarding crew. Reporting ready. What have we got?"

Mao shrugged.

"Pain in the ass for me to fit back where the breaker for this sector is, so normally I just don't and work carefully. It's over there."

He gestured to a walkway squeezed between a wall of pipes and valves and the wall of the room, only about two feet wide, and therefore singularly too narrow for his own bulk.

"Can walk you through the switches if you wanna try."

Mao squatted next to the open hatch and pointed in with his good hand.

"In there is a very neatly arranged cables and wires that would qualify as a work of art if it wasn't hooked to this ship. The gap is a rectangle about...eight and a half centimeters by six centimeters. My hands,"

He held them up to the doctor to see. Hard, permanently stained finger, covered in tiny scars from nicks, shocks and burns, off-set slightly by precise grooming of the nails, each finger being roughly four centimeters in diameter and attached to a truly massive hand that looked as if it could crack three walnuts at a time.

"The math does not equate, doctor. Your hands,"

He took the doctors comparatively gracile hands and held them up.

"Clearly the superior tool. Provided you can keep them steady and, say,
avoid touching any of the metal surfaces."

A quick but thorough sweep of the surrounding space revealed nothing but the ship's swirling vapor trail. At the moment it appears that you're alone in the black.

"Not yet. It's an ur-problem right now. The pebble that starts an avalanche, to be poetic. In hard mathematical terms, our atmo-recycler is losing zero-point-seven percentage points off of its efficiency per day for...some reason. Working on that bit. Anyway, in ten days we're down seven percent in oxygen purity as more carbon dioxide slips the net and makes it back into circulation. In hard terms, if we don't fix it within the next month, we're down a full twenty-one percent in purity. You're the doctor, so you'd agree that's bad, right?"

Mao stood from the crate and gestured with a nod through the door of the engineering compartment.

"Now, Tavi's plants are gonna help with that, a bit but I'm not relying on something as frail as organic life to keep me alive when I can fix the recycler's scrubbers today, while we're sitting at comparatively happy three-point-five percent purity loss. You following so far?"

Mao smirked as the second timer's wires continued to evade his massive fingers.

"Hmm, a gentleman never tells. Well good for you two, you sure as fuck needed someone and I'm glad you two came to a mutually beneficial arrangement. It's good for you both I think. And hey since we're being honest about uncomfortable things, the wrench agreement? That's still in effect, da-ghuh, but I mean that in the best way possible, y'know? It's never been a threat and I know you know that."

His fingertips barely managed to get a hold one the recalcitrant wiring.

Ha! There we go. Anyway, we need to have words about the doctor; I'll start. Mine: your continued abuse of the man is problematic for a number of reasons. Stop it."

He began to wire the detonators, gently and carefully ensuring that all would go simultaneously. With a critical eye he examined and selected one of the high explosive rolls.

"Good snake, thanks. So what are your words on the matter?"

The Verse / Re: Was it Red, Green, Red?

"It wouldn't reassure you. The words I mean. But the earnestness and clarity of the argument was convincing. Also, her fiercely lethal level of protectiveness over her crew is a strong indicator she has no intention of leaving or killing herself. You especially. Did things finally get romantic between you two?"

"A week? Not acceptable. Fucking goddammit."

Mao sighed and itched his scruff. Now this was a conundrum; atop needing to perform daily checks and maintenance to keep the ship running on par, he needed to be able to respond to emergencies with little to no warning beforehand. To be physically restricted in anyway not only endangered the ship, it hurt efficiency and that could not be born.

"Alright doc, you like to breath right? Oxygen's one of your favorite things? You'd recommend it to friends, family, and colleagues as a superlative substance?"

The Verse / Re: Was it Red, Green, Red?

"I dunno if it's a secret, but you've gotta approach any conversation with Tavi with few facts in your head. Firstly, this is an intelligent creature you're dealing with. Second, this creature is probably smarter than you are. Third, this creature is very dangerous."

He finished with the first timer and set it to one side and began on the second.

"Our pilot's in control of her ship. Metaphorically and literally. I didn't believe it at first, but she made a compelling argument. I trust her."

The Verse / Re: Was it Red, Green, Red?

Mao shrugged and continued twist the wires with his fingers, careful to never splice to sections of the red together, internally humming a sapper's diddy.
'Double red equates to dead, triple hue will blast true, but mix in green if you need it clean, to please the Sapper Daddy.'

"We had a polite, reasoned discussion over a glass of lemon water and a cup of hot chocolate, and like adults we brought our concerns to the table, heard each other's grievances, and found compromise. I don't press her or make her feel guilty, she doesn't subsist soley on alcohol, protein bars, and drugs. We agreed to go slowly, take baby steps, and it's working ok."

Mao shrugged again.

"Maybe I'm mischaracterizing the issue, but it was pretty simple. To me at least."

As soon as Tavi dropped into the chair, the alarms ceased their constant wailing, the sudden silence allowing you to hear the briefing ringing in your ears. It's a single ship far from any sort of trade route, or even colony. They may even be as you are; criminals trying to lay low.

The sensor suite pings it as the Deuteronomy. A standard light transport though there appears to be some form engine trouble or damage slowing it down, as well as giving it a stranger angle of axial rotation. The lasers would almost certainly be sufficient to bring the vessel to halt, permanent or otherwise.

Mao chuckled, an act that shook his boulder like frame.

"Doctor, when you have been doing this work for as long as I have, in the manner that I have, your hands very quickly turn into stones. I've got enough callouses on my palms to handle anything she can throw at me."

He thumped the plating with his free hand and smiled at the room.

"But, now and then she reminds me that I'm being stupid and gives me a love tap."

"Failed to isolate the current adequately from the wires I was working on or my fingers touched the wires and the rest of my hands completed a circuit."

He let the doctor do his work, not being so skittish or childish as to resist a trained medical professional.

"My hands are too big for the gaps I'm working in."

Mao glanced up from where he sat frowning at his hand, his pudgy brow furrowed in deep consternation and took a sip from one of his many flasks.

"Second degree electrical burn across left index and middle fingers, left thumb tip,
 left ring and pinky knuckles."

He held out the hand, which reeked of potent, nearly pure alcohol.

"Sterilized it for you, though you may wanna assess it yourself."

"Agave syrup, actually, though you gotta remember that there's a lot of goddamned stupid people out here on the Rim. They said agave, but it could easily be a mix of something or just really brown, shitty honey. Still, if the brew works well with it, I'll procure some more. It's good on hotcakes too."

As he spoke he deftly screwed open the backs of the egg-timers and began pulling and stripping bundles of wire and splicing certain ends together while attaching other ends to the electrical bits of the egg timers.

"Does Tavi like hotcakes? I managed to figure out she likes muffins, but adding another food item to that list would be prudent. Oh hey, can you make snake out of this?"

He offered Jean a brick of high explosive then went back to handling the wires. The timing devices were the hard part but really only because they were so small. Getting a charge into the wires would be easy, and the timing device was already built. Then it was just about wrapping the detonators, carefully, and placing them into the explosive.

"Not the whole thing, just three about the six inches long, and about an inch or two in diameter. And, uh, don't clap your hands, yeah?"

"Report immediately to engineering, and bring a first aide kit. Please."

Mao released the button and sat heavily on one of the many crates in the compartment, frowning at his fingers and waiting for the doctor to arrive.

Mao jerked his hand back from the knot of wires he'd thought he'd isolated from the current with a hiss and then a very loud curse as the back of his head impacted the steel plating directly above him. Shouting curses into the closed space so loudly that his ears rang, he shimmed out of the crawlspace and kicked one of his tool boxes across the engineering compartment, slinging tools everywhere in the process.

Holding his hand to the light he examined the burn with a growing fury. No black flesh, immediate blistering, highly localized. Second degree at worst you pussy.

Stomping over to the wall mounted intercom he hammer on the button to the Medbay.

"Dr. Strenger!"

"Forty-nine? Fantastic, here." Mao fished his flask out of his pocket and tossed it to Jean. "Brewed that on the flight over, tell me what you think."

Hefting  the heavy bag onto the hood of the armored truck, he unzipped it and began pulling all manner of wires, pliers, tools, two rather hefty bricks of high explosive, an assortment of electronics and two egg timers.

"Demo-calc was off for the little party favor we started the festivities with. I blame that fucking greasy goddamned vendor. Fucker probably sold us a partial mix."

The early warning system blares as the long range scanners of the Echo flare to life. It's barely past 0300 hours but it's been nearly a month since the last target, so if anything the rude awakening is a welcome one. Mao's punishingly loud automated alarm system could jolt the dead into wakefulness, and more than one conversation has been had about that very fact.

"More efficient this way," is the constant refrain.

The door screeched open and the delicate sound of loose brass followed as spent shell casings fell to the gravel. Mao stepped out of the large armored truck, which rose several inches on its suspension after his bulk was removed.

The engineer noted the blood on his gloves with disatisfaction and rubbed it off on the seat of the truck before taking his weapon, wrench and duffel bag from the passengers seat.

Whistling, he set his accoutremount down and waited for Jean to pull up, taking a brief moment to chuckle at the side of the vehicle. Numerous bullet holes and dents pockmarked the side. He shook his head and whispered to himself.

"OK so maybe it wasn't that easy."
